The Declaration

A declaration of creative origin

This mark is a declaration of creative origin.

It identifies a work conceived, developed, and brought into being by human beings. It honors the qualities inseparable from human creation: imagination and memory, intuition and judgment, uncertainty and discovery, error and revision, intention and responsibility.

The mark is not a rejection of technology. Human beings have always created through tools. It distinguishes tools that extend or execute human intention from generative systems used to originate, compose, synthesize, or materially transform expressive content.

When this mark appears, it carries a specific promise: no generative artificial intelligence was used to create or materially alter the artistic or expressive content of the work bearing it. Its language, music, images, forms, structures, and meanings arose through human thought, human choice, and human labor.

A work does not qualify for the mark merely because a human prompted, selected, edited, curated, or approved material generated by artificial intelligence. Human authorship must remain primary, continuous, and accountable throughout the creative process.

Non-generative and assistive technologies may be used for technical functions such as recording, notation, typesetting, spell-checking, file conversion, color correction, accessibility, preservation, or distribution, provided that they neither originate nor materially reshape the work’s expressive content.

The hand represents agency: the human capacity to touch, shape, write, build, and transform. The human figure and the hand emerge from a single form because the maker cannot be separated from the act of making.

Made by Humans affirms a simple principle

What begins in human consciousness,
is formed through human intention,
and is carried into the world through human choice
should remain recognizable as human.

Formal Standard

The Made by Humans mark may be applied only to work whose artistic or expressive content was conceived and created by human beings without generative artificial intelligence originating or materially transforming that content.
