The Work

Suite · Nine Preludes from 24 Preludes is a compact solo piano work drawn from Auerbach’s larger cycle of twenty-four piano preludes. Rather than offering the complete traversal of the full cycle, the suite creates a concentrated arc of nine pieces, preserving the character of the original while forming an independent concert work.

The chosen preludes move through dreamlike lyricism, severity, velocity, darkness and grandeur. In this shortened form, the cycle becomes a chamber of selected intensities: not an excerpt in the casual sense, but a deliberate constellation.

A suite of nine thresholds, drawn from a larger map of all tonalities and reshaped into a single dramatic span.
  • Form Suite in nine preludes.
  • Duration Approximately 15 minutes.
  • Forces Solo piano.

Context

Auerbach’s complete cycle of twenty-four piano preludes moves through the full tonal spectrum. The suite distills that larger architecture into a more compact sequence, allowing the performer to present a focused version of the cycle’s emotional and pianistic range.

The selected preludes are not arranged as a neutral sampler. Their order creates its own trajectory, moving from inward motion and quickened tension through grave stillness, mystery, tragic weight and a final grand statement.

The suite is not the whole cycle reduced; it is the whole cycle remembered through nine chosen doors.
