The Work

Prelude, Toccata and Postlude is a short solo work for vibraphone composed in 2003. Its three-part design suggests a compressed instrumental drama: opening, motion and after-sound.

The vibraphone’s sonority gives the work a distinctive ambiguity. Its attack is percussive, yet its resonance can remain suspended, blurred and almost vocal. This dual nature allows the music to move between clarity and atmosphere within a compact span.

The section titles point toward different states of energy: the first grand and tragic, the second marked and kinetic, the third more spacious and reflective.

A vibraphone triptych of tragic attack, marked motion and suspended after-sound.
  • Form Three-section solo work.
  • Duration Approximately 4 minutes.
  • Forces Solo vibraphone.

Context

The vibraphone is an instrument of paradox: metallic and warm, percussive and sustained, precise and atmospheric. In a solo setting, these qualities become central to the expressive identity of the piece.

Auerbach’s title places the work within a lineage of formal archetypes while allowing the vibraphone to transform them. The prelude opens a space, the toccata activates it, and the postlude lets resonance become memory.
