The Work

Prayer places a single saxophone line in an exposed spiritual space. Without accompaniment, the instrument must create its own gravity, resonance and silence.

The title T’filah points toward prayer as both utterance and listening. The music suggests an inward address rather than display: a line shaped by breath, memory and concentration.

The four saxophones reveal different expressive colors within the work: the soprano’s clarity, the alto’s vocal warmth, the tenor’s depth and the baritone’s dark resonance. Each remains a complete, independent solo version.

A solitary saxophone prayer, where breath becomes voice and one line becomes remembrance.
  • Form One movement.
  • Duration Approximately 6 minutes.
  • Forces Solo soprano, alto, tenor or baritone saxophone.

Context

Prayer exists in several solo versions within Auerbach’s catalogue. Its four saxophone versions extend the work’s central idea across the full saxophone register, from soprano to baritone.

The original T’filah was written in 1996 as a response to the tragedy of the Holocaust. In each saxophone version, the work’s prayerful character is carried through the body of the instrument: breath, resistance, tone and silence.
