The Work

Monologue transforms the double bass into a dramatic solo voice. The instrument’s natural depth becomes more than register; it becomes atmosphere, interiority and weight.

The title suggests speech, but a kind of speech that happens beneath the surface. The bass does not merely project outward; it seems to think aloud, allowing resonance and silence to become part of the utterance.

In this early solo work, Auerbach treats the unaccompanied instrument as a complete theatrical space. The performer stands alone, yet the music implies dialogue, memory and an unseen listener.

A solitary double bass monologue, where depth becomes voice and resonance becomes memory.

Context

The double bass is often heard as foundation, pulse and shadow. In Monologue, it becomes the entire expressive field: voice, body, resonance and stage.

The work belongs to Auerbach’s early group of unaccompanied solo pieces, where a single instrument is asked to sustain the full psychological drama of the music.
