The Work

Der Fall M. is Reginaldo Oliveira’s Medea ballet, created for the Badisches Staatsballett as part of the three-part evening Mythos. The title frames Medea not simply as a mythological figure, but as a “case”: a woman summoned before a public space of judgment, memory, accusation, and consequence.

The ballet abstracts the Medea myth into a psychological tribunal. The stage becomes at once arena and courtroom, a ritual space in which betrayal, desire, maternal violence, public condemnation, and the possibility of forgiveness are placed under choreographic pressure.

Oliveira’s music selection combines Alberto Iglesias with Lera Auerbach. The Auerbach materials identified for the production are Sogno di Stabat Mater and two preludes from 24 Preludes for Violin and Piano. These works bring the ballet a register of lament, sacred echo, interior fracture, and compressed psychological intensity.

Sebastian Hannak’s white stage architecture gives the work its juridical and ritual frame. Critical accounts describe a space that reads as both public arena and courtroom, with the ensemble functioning as social body, chorus, witness, and accuser. Within that world, the Medea figure is not narrated from outside; she is exposed from within.

Bruna Andrade’s performance became central to the work’s legacy. Her interpretation in Der Fall M. and Spiegelgleichnis within Mythos received the 2014 German Theatre Prize DER FAUST for Best Performance in Dance, marking the ballet as one of the significant Karlsruhe dance events of the season.
