The Work

Primera luz, Lera Auerbach’s String Quartet No. 2, unfolds as a twenty-three-minute sequence in six movements. Its Spanish title means “first light,” and the movement titles suggest a passage through memory, solitude, questioning, ecstatic dialogue, tragedy and epilogue.

The score opens with Memoria de la luz, followed by the inward voice of Monólogo, the suspended inquiry of Cuatro preguntas, the heightened exchange of Diálogo extático, the dark weight of Trágico, and the final Epílogo.

The quartet becomes a passage through light, solitude, question, ecstasy, tragedy, and the fragile after-light of an epilogue.

Commissioned by Semana de Música Religiosa Cuenca and premiered there by the Tokyo String Quartet, the work extends Auerbach’s quartet cycle into a sound world where illumination and lament are inseparable.

  • Primera luz A title of emergence, memory and first illumination.
  • Tokyo Quartet Dedicated to and premiered by the Tokyo String Quartet.
  • Cuenca Commissioned by Semana de Música Religiosa Cuenca.
