The Work

par.ti.ta is a ten-movement work for solo violin, composed in 2007 and written specifically for Vadim Gluzman. Its title points toward the historical solo-violin partita while interrupting the word through punctuation, suggesting fragmentation, refraction and reassembly.

The work unfolds as a sequence of brief, concentrated movements, beginning with a free prelude and ending with a postlude. Between them, the music moves through scherzando motion, seriousness, darkness, tragedy, gravity and obsessive energy.

A contemporary solo-violin partita: fractured, concentrated and shadowed by the memory of Bach.
  • Form Ten movements.
  • Duration Approximately 25 minutes.
  • Forces Solo violin.

Context

The work was commissioned by Bachwoche Ansbach and premiered by Vadim Gluzman at the festival on 29 July 2007. In the BIS recording notes, Gluzman describes the piece as projecting Auerbach’s lifelong fascination with Bach, not through direct quotation, but through shades and echoes.

The solo-violin medium places par.ti.ta in direct conversation with the lineage of Bach, Ysaÿe and later solo violin works, while retaining Auerbach’s own language of memory, fracture and heightened dramatic concentration.
