Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale “The Little Mermaid” is not only a work of world literature but has also meanwhile become a widely performed, world renowned ballet thanks to the stirring choreography by John Neumeier. Following the world premiere of the ballet music by Lera Auerbach in 2005 to celebrate the occasion of the 200th birthday of Hans Christian Andersen, the work was performed on many stages throughout the world. Neumeier created a multi-layered interpretation of the little mermaid by setting the fairytale scenario in two opposing worlds. The simple underwater world of the sea creatures forms a contrast to the contradictory life of people on land. The mermaid travels through both worlds; although she bears much suffering on account of her unconditional love for the prince, she also experiences redemption in the end.
