The Work
Seraphim Canticles is a string sextet conceived as a continuous passage through emotional extremity. Its six movements follow one another attacca, creating a single ritual trajectory rather than a sequence of separate scenes.
The title invokes the Seraph: the six-winged angel, radiant and terrifying. In this work, the sextet itself becomes a six-part body — six instruments, six movements, six sources of flame — moving from grief and pressure toward exaltation.
- Form Six movements, attacca.
- Forces Two violins, two violas, two cellos.
- Image Fire, despair, exaltation.
Context
The performance note asks that the work be approached without traditional hierarchy: all six instruments have leading material and solo passages, and leading material should be played with the greatest expressivity, often in recitativo style with rhythmic freedom.
The sonic world depends on extremes of color: sul ponticello, flautando, sul tasto, glissandi, tremoli, and sharply differentiated dynamics. These are not surface effects but part of the work’s expressive core — the means by which its inner fire is made audible.
