The Work

72 Angels is structured as seventy-two interconnected prelude-evocations and an epilogue, Amen. The movements are performed without pauses, creating a single continuous composition rather than a sequence of separate miniatures.

Each prelude sets one of the seventy-two names derived through an arcane interpretation of Exodus 14:19–21. The score positions angelic beings, spiritual guides, messengers and higher energies as a shared human theme across religious, spiritual, esoteric and mythological traditions.

In essence, 72 Angels is a long, intense prayer, full of passion and hope.

The saxophone quartet is central to the work’s sound-world: capable of evoking the raw force of the shofar, the wildness of beasts, the brilliance of trumpets, the delicacy of woodwinds, the gravity of an organ, or the shimmer of a glass harmonica.

  • Form72 prelude-evocations and epilogue.
  • DivisionsStructural markers after preludes 24, 36 and 48.
  • EndingAmen, a quiet postlude-meditation.

Performance Notes

The work should be performed without intermission. All movements are attacca; if needed, a short pause may be taken after prelude 24 and prelude 48.

All glissandi are molto ad libitum and slow. All poco glissandi should be slow, slight slides, imitating a sigh.

  • ContinuityWithout intermission.
  • TransitionsAll movements attacca.
  • SoundSlow glissandi, often sigh-like.

Name DerivationExodus 14:19–21

It is said that the waters were divided upon Moses’ invocation of the “explicit name,” found encoded in Exodus 14:19–21. The name is composed of 216 letters and divided into seventy-two three-letter sequences.

The three verses are aligned one above another and read boustrophedonically: the first from right to left, the second from left to right, and the third from right to left. In Hebrew, each verse contains seventy-two letters. The names are read from right to left and vertically from top to bottom; El or Yah is added to the sequences to form the names of seventy-two angels.

The score notes that Hebrew has no vowels and that pronunciation was transmitted orally, varying according to regional dialects. The transliteration used in the work searches for commonality among Indo-European languages, as well as clarity and ease for the singing voice.

Pronunciation GuideEnglish transliteration

yah — soft “y” and silent “h”. el’ — soft “l”. H/h — soft “h”. Ḥ/ḥ — hard “h”. Mh — sing with closed mouth on long notes, bocca chiusa. Om — short open “O,” then “Mh” with closed mouth on long notes. ´ — accented syllable.
