The Work

Speak, Memory is a short work for violin and piano written in 2010 for Hilary Hahn’s In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores, a project of newly commissioned encore works for acoustic violin and piano.

Premiered in fall 2011 by Hilary Hahn and Cory Smythe, the work became part of Hahn’s multi-season international encore project and was later recorded by Hahn and Smythe for Deutsche Grammophon.

The title evokes Vladimir Nabokov’s memoir Speak, Memory, opening a chamber-scale space of recollection, distance and time.
