The Work

Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 3 “De profundis” was written for Vadim Repin and the Trans-Siberian Art Festival in Novosibirsk. Although articulated in three attacca movements, the concerto unfolds as one single dramatic arch. Its title, De profundis — “from the depths” — suggests a musical space of inward descent, concentration and resonance.

The opening, Andante sognando, establishes a dreamlike atmosphere, a suspended state in which the solo violin seems to emerge from a hidden interior space. The second movement, Allegro marcato, brings a sharper, more marked energy, while the final Adagio pesante moves toward weight, gravity and depth.

From the depths: a concerto of descent, intensity and inward resonance.

The orchestration surrounds the solo violin with a chamber-like but vividly colored orchestral body: paired winds with doublings, brass, timpani, two percussionists, harp, piano, celesta and strings. The result is concentrated rather than expansive, allowing the solo line to carry the work’s dramatic and spiritual weight.

  • De profundis The title suggests a musical utterance rising from depth, pressure and inward necessity.
  • Vadim Repin The concerto was commissioned for Vadim Repin and premiered at the Trans-Siberian Art Festival.
  • Single Arch Three attacca movements form one continuous dramatic trajectory.
